Education CurriculumRegistration is now open for our Summer Music Programs! Lagond Music offers private lessons, partner lessons, band workshops, performance bands, songwriting workshops, music industry classes, and preparation for college music majors (including audition demos). All classes are taught with a specific curriculum consisting of 12 proficiency levels. Each level involves playing, reading and writing and is designed to bring you from beginner through advanced stages in your musicianship. The Lagond Music school year is a 34-week year, September through June. All students are enrolled from the student's start date through the end of the year. All potential students must audition for proper course placement. Private Lessons Students receive one-on-one instruction from a faculty comprised of professional musicians who assess their abilities to provide nurturing yet challenging instruction. Lessons focus on increasing musicianship and proficiency on their chosen instrument. Regular practice is expected. Instructors partner with parents by providing written feedback after each lesson. Lagond Music faculty and Directors form teams during a student's tenure at Lagond Music to discuss the student's progress and to set short- and long-term goals for the student's musical growth.Private lessons are offered in guitar, bass, piano/keyboard, drums/percussion, woodwinds, brass and voice. Partner Lessons Students receive instruction along with one other student of similar ability and age from a faculty member. Partner lessons are taught with the same approach and dedication as described above in Private Lessons. They are arranged for students who are in need of financial assistance.Band Workshops Are geared toward group development in a variety of contemporary musical genres: Jazz, Latin, Funk, Rock and sub-genres. Private study and workshop curricula work hand-in-hand covering the application of theory, analysis, history, groove and rhythm, improvisation/soloing and repertoire building. In addition, students are coached on the significance of group dynamics, cooperation, collaboration and group decision-making. To be considered for a Band Workshop, students are evaluated and tested for placement purposes. They are led by a faculty member and receive one performance over a 34-week time period. Performing Bands Are geared toward group development in contemporary musical genres. Students study more complex repertoire in Jazz, Latin, Funk, Rock and sub genres. Private study and workshop curricula work hand-in-hand covering the application of advanced theory, analysis, history, groove and rhythm, improvisation/soloing, repertoire building with an emphasis on performance, visualization and artist development. Performing band students are required to participate in the Lagond Music Honors Program (see "Merit Programs"). They will receive up to 4 performances commencing in January. Songwriting Workshops Are geared toward the aspiring songwriters. This workshop welcomes students who possess a basic foundation in music language. This curriculum brings you along step by step from inspiration to musical form, lyrics and writing charts. Regular peer and faculty critique will take place in songwriter circle groups as well as the opportunity for one performance over a 34-week time period. Active lesson enrollment in main instrument is required.Lagond Songwriter Sessions Are for the serious songwriter who is ready to record, perform solo or lead a band with their original songs or be an accompanist to other musicians. Songwriter Sessions perform a minimum of 4 to 6 gigs commencing in January. Attention is given to stage presence and artist development toward a goal of developing stage savvy songwriters. Songwriter Session students are required to participate in the Lagond Music Honors Program (see "Merit Programs"). Remedial Theory Offered to any student needing additional assistance with theory covered within private lessons, workshops or performing bands. Remedial Theory can be either group or private classes.Music Industry Workshops Will be a series of hour-long lectures covering the areas of artist development, management and promotion. Suggested topics to be covered include: how to make a good demo, music publishing, understanding copyrights, what a manager should do, anatomy of a record company, touring, contracts, marketing-PR-publicity, and licensing.Conservatory Prep Program Is geared toward the professional-bound music student whose goal is to attend a music college. It is also open to advanced-level high school students who wish to bring their high school music career to the highest level possible before embarking on an academic college route. Conservatory Prep students can and are encouraged to enroll as early as ninth grade. It is open to all instruments, songwriters, music education, industry, production and voice majors. Students are tested and evaluated for placement purposes. The curriculum provides private lessons on a student's instrument, group theory, ear training, sight reading, harmony and appropriate workshops in ensemble playing, repertoire building, mock auditions, songwriting or production. The student will have the option to record a pre-screening audition demo required for college entrance or competitions. College conservatory faculty participates on a regular basis to work side-by-side with the students. Conservatory Prep students are required to participate in the Lagond Music Honors Program (see "Merit Programs"). The Conservatory Prep Program is available for 15 or 30-week sessions (on a weekend day 10am-5pm), as well as in the summer. Ultimate Performance Is our professional apprenticeship program. It is the culmination of studies with emphasis on performance at the highest level, including a year-end tour. This program is open to instrumentalists, songwriters and vocalists. First semester proceeds on an educational, conservatory prep model. The student is expected to continue private lessons on their main instrument. Artist development and promotion become the main focus in second semester. By January a promotional CD is recorded and a minimum of 5 performances begin by February followed by a 7 to 14 day tour at the end of June/beginning of July. Minimum two-year commitment is recommended for this course. Ultimate Performance students must be enrolled in the Lagond Music Ambassadors Merit Program (see "Merit Programs"). Ultimate Performance is a 3-hour class. Summer Program Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm July and August Lagond Music summer session offers two programs: a 3-week Immersion Program for students aged 8 through 18, consisting of groove and rhythm, improvisation, written and aural theory, analysis, history, repertoire building, combo playing and guest master classes. The 3-week Immersion Program is equivalent to a Lagond Music school 17-week semester with proficiency tests at the end of the program. The second summer session is our Conservatory Prep Program for ages 14 through 20 (see description above). Merit Programs Application Deadline: Due to the Registrar by August 23 of each calendar year. Please note that the Honors Program and Ambassador Program are only open to current Lagond Music students enrolled in both private lessons and ensemble programs. Honors Program Is a merit-based program designed to enrich the musical development of our musicians, establish good practice habits and organizational skills. As part of the program, Honors students must take a weekly private lesson and performing band/songwriter sessions. They are also required to demonstrate good practice habits, actively participate in listening assignments, either perform in Lagond Music events or attend Lagond music performances and master classes or volunteer at activities, depending on the chosen curriculum. Once admitted to this prestigious program, a Lagond Music Honors student is eligible to hold paid positions at the school. To be eligible, students must be of high school age and have taken private lessons and be actively enrolled in a performing band/songwriter sessions at Lagond Music for at least one complete school year. The Lagond Music Ambassador Program Is entirely merit-based and has more demanding requirements. It includes a list of activities consisting of private lessons, practice, listening, conservatory prep or professional apprenticeship programs, concert attendance, performance, and a volunteer activity. Some activities are required, while others may be chosen for the semester. Once admitted to this prestigious program, a Lagond Music Ambassador will participate in a variety of activities, be eligible to hold paid positions at the school and is given a modest stipend, which is applied towards tuition.To be eligible, students must be of high school age, have taken private lessons, and be actively enrolled in the conservatory prep or ultimate performance program at Lagond Music in good standing and for at least one complete school year.
